Making Distilled Water

Many people recognize the benefits of drinking and using distilled water, but they still are to using it because they do not want to purchase equipment to distill water at home and buying it at the store can be costly after a while. There is a way to distill your own water at home without the need for anything you do not already own.

You can easily learn how to make distilled water at home using your coffeepot. Distilling water is nothing more than boiling it and capturing the steam. When you use your coffeepot you get the same perks as you do when you use distilling equipment and with a few modifications you get a distiller.

Let’s Begin

To begin with you will need a few items besides your coffeemaker. You should gather up a cooking pot with a lid, ice cubes and some water to distill. You will also need something that can fit inside your pot that your coffeepot can sit on.

Once you have organized your materials you can begin the set up. Start by putting the brick or other nonflammable, sturdy item of your choice inside the pot. Place the pot on the stove burner and fill it with water. Set your coffeepot on the brick and put the lid on top of the pot.

It is important that the lid is rounded so that it will completely close and rest over the coffeepot without touching it.

Now you should turn on the burner and allow the water to boil. Once boiling you can lower the heat slightly, but be sure to keep the water continuously boiling. Place the ice cubes on top of the lid. You may need to put them in baggies and hold them on the lid.

What happens is the ice cubes cool down the lid. The steam from the boiled water hits the lid and falls into the waiting coffeepot. You get distilled water.

It is important to make sure that every piece of equipment you use is clean and sterile. If possible run each through the dishwasher to ensure it is completely clean.

The whole process will take some time to get the whole coffeepot filled with water so be prepared to wait. Getting a gallon on distilled water can take some time, but you did it without having to buy any equipment.
